With members hailing from Aotearoa and Australia, Direct Influence encompasses what is unique to the South Pacific, a love for reggae music and a feel for words with meaning.
Unyielding musicians, Direct Influence are; Dylan-Vocals (New Zealand) Marcus-Lead Guitar (Bunyip, Australia) Lachie-Bass (Bunyip, Australia) Andrew-Drums (Bunyip, Australia) Jarrah-Keys (Clayton, Australia) Sydney-Sax (Port Cambell, Australia).
Two of the six members Lachie and Marcus, who are brothers alongside Andrew who was a neighbor, began jamming in the mid nineties at the tender age of 12, 13 and 16 in a band called The Devients; they went onto win numerous battles of the bands and gained a massive following around Gippsland with their unique style of rap and rock. At a young age these already solid musicians realized that music was in their blood and that they couldn’t escape the reality of music being a career.
Dylan Smith escaped from the rough streets of South Auckland, New Zealand to battle his way to the simple country life with family in Cloverlea, Australia. This was a culture shock for him and he expressed himself through hip hop, reggae and roots type music the only way he knew how, with a guitar, a pen and a pad. Dylan first hooked up with The Devients back in 1999-2000 when they performed together at a gig in Warragul, Gippsland, this meeting would prove to be the start of the Direct Influence.
In 2003 the boys changed their name to Direct Influence and with a few additions to the band they went to the studio and created a 4 track self titled EP. Playing a unique style of reggae and hip hop they had instant success, grabbing the attention of Reggae Maestro Nicky Bomba, Nicky was impressed by the style of music that Direct Influence was playing and he offered to record and produce their second EP titled ‘Finally’.
This saw them play alongside acts such as Regurgitator and Paul Mac at many of Melbourne’s finest establishments.

After selling all but 10 copies of the disc Direct Influence teamed up with True Live’s Ryan ‘Rhyno’ Ritches to produce their 3rd EP ‘Herbal Ninja’. This EP received airtime on Triple J, PBS, RRR and made it to number 2 on Syn FM’s music charts. After being received with open arms up Australia’s East Coast and Victoria’s Ski fields. Direct Influence are currently putting their finishing touches on their forthcoming EP 'Better Day' coming early 2008. The first single 'Home' is up on myspace for those of you who would like a sneak peak....
