Chris Nott

PROFILE

How old are you and how long have you been at it?
I'm 29, and I've been DJing for about 31/2 years now.

When, how and who roped you into the world of DJing?
I've been into the house scene basically from the start, back in 1988 when it was acid house but I first had access to decks somewhere around the end of 1992 and about a year later I got my first set of decks with help from my best mate Martin and from then on I only had one ambition on my mind.

Where can we catch you playing round at the moment?
I'm currently doing work for 'Corruption' and 'Delicious'. I'm also doing my own Loveboat Cruises with a guy called Dave Anderson and I've got a few other things in the Pipeline for the future.

What kind of music do you like to play and why?
Well mainly I play happy to uplifting house because basically that's what kicks for me.

What's your trick to get a crowd going?
I don't really know if there's a trick, I just believe in putting the time and effort into constructing the right set for the right night.

What makes you good at what you do?
I don't really like to predict how good I am, I just know that the music I love is the heart and soul of my ambition and with my long term knowledge of music I like to think I know what people want.

What shits/thrills you about DJing?
There's not much I don't like really except mainly the politics of it all and the idiots that come up and fall all over the decks and scratch your records. As for the thrills well basically if I feel like I've played well and the crowd have gone off well there's no better feeling for me.

What have been the highlights so far?
I think without doubt the Loveboat Cruise that I've done have been the best for me because with virtually no resources we've pulled off what for me has been the most memorable parties in my time in Sydney but being on the same bill as Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong and Luv Dup is something I'll never forget.

The low points?
Seeing Radio Bondi fold back last year respect to Dye and Emma you really

What's the funniest/most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you while DJing?
I was crawling about under the decks at Delicious one night looking for a piece to my headphones when I noticed that the record was stuck, in a panic I got up quickly and bashed my head on the table knocking the record back into place, I paused for a second, gave myself the thumbs up and carried on looking.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry?
Whatever happens always remember it takes a lot of guts to stand up behind those decks however may people are out there, try not to lose self.

Is DJing the career move of the 90's?
I don't know if it's a career for everyone it just depends on how dedicated to it you are, most top DJs have been doing it for over 20 years, so they deserve to be where they are.

What are your other interests? What else takes up your time?
I think without doubt travelling is now my main interest, I can't wait to see some more of Australia, for me it's the most beautiful country in the world. Plans for the future? Hopefully more of the same but I'd also like to get into the studio more.

Where do you see the club scene and dance music heading?
I think the arrival of International Guests can only put Sydney more on the music map but I think techno and jungle will come into the light more.

What are your current Top tunes?
I Heat up - Mach V, plus one (OOAK)
Gotta Get Loose - Slamm Records

Your all time Top 5?
1. Papa New Guinea Future Sound Of London
2. What's That Kokopelli
3. Back To My Roots FPI Project
4. Waterfall Atlantic Ocean
5. Let Me Love You For Tonight Kariya

And finally, give us 3 DJs, Australian or otherwise who you respect and why?
There are many I respect but if any stand out it would have to be Pee Wee, as big as he is he still conducts himself in a good and professional manner, also Dave Kirkpatrick and Martyn Allen for giving me a chance when I really needed it.
