BIZ E

The year was 1984 when Herbie Hancock unleashed the phat electro rhythms of “rockit”.For a selected few this was the first taste of breakdance culture and the art of the dj cutting and scratching.To14 year old Biz E this represented the conception of his future passion, and the start of his obsession with black music.Since then Biz has seen the evolution of dance culture from the slamming beats of hip hop,to the psyhadelic grunge of acid house. He has experienced the vibe of the first Horden dance parties, when clubs like “spagos”were in their prime. The first raves held in low ceiling wharehouse oozing with sweat, the only lighting being a single strobe. All these experiences have shaped his Dj style-a style which incorporates all things funky from the fast cutting of hiphop, the smoothness of chicago house, the building rush of acid music,to the rawness of the funk, that bottom heavy groove that you just can’t resist. When Biz E is in the mix he is constantly working, self indulgent to the point of being unique yet always watching the crowd, using his experience to know just what to do next to keep the floor rocking.

-Since the start of his dj career Biz E has played at hundreds of parties, and it would be impossible to name them all,but there are a few that deserve a mention:

-the “Children of The Vortex” parties
-these included Vortex(91),Aztec(92),Ecology(93),Eon(94)
-the “Tribal” parties
-the “Virtual Bass” and “totem” parties
-these included Ov Thee Earth Tribe(94),Carnival Ov thee Mind(95)
-the “Freakin” parties(96-97)

-Biz E has performed both interstate and overseas. He has had three successful tours to New Zealand working in Auckland,Wellington, and North Palmerston for Troubador Records(responsible for international artists such as Dave Angel,Stacy Pullen, and Juan Atkins touring that part of the world). He has been the international artist for the successful “Solid” parties in Wellington which have played a major role in shaping the Wellington techno scene.Biz E has toured Melbourne with guest spots at “Filter”(club run by Octave Records),”Teriaki anarki saki”,and “Redheads”(run by successful promoter Richard Maher). He has toured Adelaide as the support for Carl Craig(promoted by Paul Hodder).Biz E has played in Brisbane three times for various promoters. While in Europe last year Biz played at Final Frontier at the legendary Complex in London.

-Biz E first started doing radio work in 91 with the cult late night show “Tranquility Bass” which with its blend of controversy, cutting edge music and humour developed a large following and successfully lasted for three years. He has done many interviews on 2SER for various radio shows, has appeared on both “Mix-up”on JJJ and “Mozaic”and is about to host a show on new radio station “Radio Dex”.

-In 1992 Biz E began his exploration in the field of production, and has since then established himself as a successful recording artist under the guise of Calix. He has had three releases on his label pH recordings which have been distributed worldwide by Kudos(UK distributor who distribute the likes of Aphex Twin and Black Dog).He has released tracks on compilations such as “Trance Pacific Express”(UK release)and “Pathways”(Adelaide release with artsts HMC,and Voitech). His latest project is the label Dope Dragon with three releases scheduled for release thru UK distributor Prime. Calix has also performed live on many occasions with the same ease he applies when on the wheels of steel.

-In 1993 Biz E started working for Central Station records in Sydney due to a lack of serious music being avaliable. He founded Hardwax records and then managed it for four years.During this time he played a major role in establishing the local release of quality techno in Australia and was responsible for the release of the “Xtrax” compilation, the “Submerge” Detroit compilation, and the “Noom” compilation.

-As a party promoter Biz E’s efforts included:

Mental(91 “the first Sydney rave to have an all Australian dj line up”)
Escape(92)
Dreamscape(93)
Morph(95)
Octophuzz(95 NYE Balmain church)
Blue Apple Phunk(96 Balmain Fair)

Biz e’s parties have had attendances between 300-900 people. The emphasize always being on color and creativity.the agenda:solid grooves, sweaty bodies, and lots of mental stimulus.
