“ A terrifyingly erotic and haunting 70 minutes” – The Guardian
Red Stitch Theatre presents the Victorian premiere of Bryony Lavery's Stockholm, a play that uniquely combines dialogue, narration, movement, design and music. The result is a forensic dissection of a relationship, which fluctuates between the erotic and the macabre.
Meet Todd and Kali, the quintessential couple every couple wants to be. Young and beautiful they are the perfect team. They have redesigned a house (complete with Smeg fridge), they watch arthouse films in the afternoons, celebrate birthdays with fabulous getaways and have fantastic sex. And they love each other like crazy - they love each other so much they eat each other up.
Tomorrow they will be in Stockholm, a city where, in summer, the sun shines 24/7 and sometimes it's dark all day long. But that’s tomorrow and today is Todd’s birthday and she's going to give him all his presents and treats and surprises.
Bryony Lavery’s Stockholm is a love story with hidden bruises and deep scratch marks. Treading a fine line between tenderness and cruelty and questioning the lines between love and lust, aggressor and victim, Stockholm reveals the destruction that damaged adults in love can cause. It's beautiful, but it's not pretty.
The title taken from the paradoxical phenomenon Stockholm Syndrome, a psychological condition where hostages feel sympathy for their hostage takers. Bryony Lavery’s combination of outstanding new writing and strong physical interpretation tells a story of the pain we are willing to subject ourselves to in the name of love.
Stockholm is directed by Tanya Gerstle and will feature ensemble member Brett Cousins as Todd and guest actor Luisa Hastings Edge as Kali.
