Wanted: Musicians to form live dub/triph

Experienced rhythm section (drummer and bass player in our mid - late 30's) based in the southern suburbs, with pro gear and attitude looking to form something a little different from your average band.
If you have an open mind......please read on.

The idea is to write, record & gig original tunes in the vein of London Elektricity, Groove Armada, dj shadow, mr scruff....etc etc Jazzy inspired. Sort of an electro/acoustic take on Dj and electronic music that is both groovy and loungey at the same time. (see youtube examples at bottom of page, listen and read on)

We will need an MC/rapper/vox, female vox, keyboard/piano player, brass and/or woodwind player (sax, trombone, trumpet, flute, clarinet), lead guitarist, and midi/ sample player / dj/ turntablist, all with ever open minds. Multi instrumentalists a bonus and/or a midi keyboardist who can emulate the above instrument sounds.

It will be a chilled sort of vibe suited to lounge bars and small venues. Think DJ shadow vibe that breaks out into a jungle section London Elektricity style with hints of funk and even jazz/reggae/dub!!! Can you dig it yet???

Anyone keen to have a jam please get in touch via email and link your music and/or influences (youtube vids etc) and lets get it on! xelf@spraci.com

Below are links to youtube videos that explain the similar sounds we are looking to do. copy and paste into browser.

Has anybody ever heard about a band called TribalJazz? They are a new band started by the drummer of the Doors, John Densmore. TribalJazz took jazz from all aspect and made their own sound. I heard a couple of their songs when they came to my job at Universal and they were excellent. I was very surprise with their different sound and their blend of world music. They are an experience that everybody should want to encounter. I like a couple of their songs from their debut self-title album and I highly recommend that anybody and everybody who loves good music. I found a link to their myspace page.
Tony Adamo/Mike Clark-The Funk is Among

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tony Adamo/Mike Clark The Funk is Among Us
Franki LaMantia, New York

Mike Clark, the sonic jazz/funk beat master headlines a two-nighter at The Boom, Boom Room in San Francisco, California on September 15 & 16 with his Prescription Renewal Band. Clark, of Herbie Hancock fame, is one of the most sampled drummers around. All you have to do is ask Prince, Janet Jackson, or Christina Aguilera.

While in the City by the Bay, Clark will be at Different Fur Recording Studio laying down his distinctively innovative and muscular polyrhythmic beats on two new songs for singer/songwriter, Tony Adamo. This gives Adamo and his producer, Jerry Stucker an opportunity to once again renew their musical friendship with Clark. Earlier this year, Clark laid down the drum tracks for Passport with Eddie Henderson on trumpet. With the combination of Clark and Henderson and Adamos hipster style, there is no doubt that the funk is among us. You can listen to Passport on Adamos new CD to be released in 2007.
Cjeff-Positive

Artist: Cjeff
Title: Positive
Genre: Instrumental-Contemporary-Jazz-Fusion
Label: Independent
Website

Christopher Leighton, known as Cjeff in the world of music, has a new release titled Positive. Leighton makes his way through 10 lively tracks hewn with the textures and colors of contemporary jazz, the fusion of rock, and tasty pop leanings that could find a home in the world of cinema or another recording studio for sampling.

Cjeff intends to offer his music for licensing so other artists can utilize it for whatever purpose they see fit. With that kind of coverage you could be become well known very quickly. It would be akin to being a well-known session musician except the artist would not have to be in the studio, just provide the tracks as needed.

This artist is good enough to carve out his own career without that type of arrangement. Even so, it is a very smart way to market your wares, and one never knows what kind of opportunity it could create. Hopefully people in the industry well recognize the talent of this man and the possibilities that he can afford those in the world of multi-media and music.

With exception of Its _ U, the entire CD is an instrumental montage. Cjeff does not have a bad voice at all but I think staying the course with the instrumentals is the best bet, as this is where all of his strengths are.

The best track is Return To New Orleans. Upon my first listen to this particular track, I had no idea what the title was, as I was not paying any attention to what number track was actually playing. As I was taking in the first few minutes of the song, I looked down the track list and knew instantly what song it was. Cjeff takes the city of New Orleans and turns it into an instrumental picture with spicy jazz flavorings along with a proud tone that is befitting of the courageous people based in that area. The idea is to project all the feelings that make up this great city and convince you that you are right there. Cjeff makes this happen within the framework of the song in a convincing fashion, and in the other tracks as well. His goal of bringing a picture to life with music flows naturally on every track.

Cjeff plays bass, guitars, and keyboards, which drives other various synth parts and drum tracks. Notably, the artist writes the drum tracks from scratch. So what you hear in its entirety on this recording is the best of both worlds, the old school way of making music and the utilization of new technologies combined to make an appealing presentation spread across the canvas of a multi-hued musical canvas.

Chicago XXX

Artist: Chicago
Title: XXX
Genre: Rock-Pop-Jazz
Label: Rhino
Website

Chicago is the product of consistency and keeping key core members in the band for the last 37 years. XXX is their 30th studio recording and a total demonstration of their wherewithal and greatness as a thriving unit. I am the first to say I enjoyed their older material, the first five albums where incredibly good. Over the years, they have changed members and their style but what you hear is indisputably Chicago. The reasons for their success are many and probably the most important factor that contributes to that ongoing success is that they have managed to keep that base sound intact. The all-important horns are always there and the leadership of long time members like Robert Lamm, Walt Parazaider, James Pankow, Lee Loughnane, and Bill Champlin, serve as the guiding light of this modern day musical marvel. The vocals have sounded pretty much the same since Peter Cetera was at the helm. The have managed to find clones of his vocal style, thus making any of the changes seamless and smooth to the music buying public. To say they have been a commercial success is an understatement.

There are 13 tracks on this CD and they all have the potential to be a hit singleno surprise there. Their output is comparative to The Beatles; every time they put an album out, they fill it with great and memorable songs. I cannot think of one band that is still actively recording that can do that. That is what makes Chicago so special. The first time I heard the album I thought it was a bit too pop oriented for my liking, and then as I gave it successive spins it gradually grew on me. The realization that this band had done it again hit me square between the eyes. The driving pop rhythms of love and loss are here, the great rhythm section, horns, fantastic vocals-all in place lined up like a well-practiced platoon with its marching orders. This recording is one that all the band members should be proud to add to the Chicago legacy.

The tracks that had me singing in no time were King of Might Have Been, Caroline, and the made for hit single 90 Degrees and Freezing. This is a sure bet to be a chart topper, its archetypal Chicago and it reminded of the band in their prime. Sure, I still like the risqu progressive Chicago that played those immortal dates at Carnegie Hall, but this version of the band is very good and as I said before, who else is making music like this? This is quality music, the lyrics are not offensive or negative, nor do they promote violence or drug abuse, know how much trash is out there today selling by the truckload that offers all of that?...A little too much as far as I am concerned. The jazz purists will complain as usual and the old time fans may say it has too much syrupy pop for their gullets, but you know what? Its one of the best albums I have heard this year and the musicianship is simply outstanding. Listen to it a few times, I guarantee you will be hooked, even if you do not like it the first time just like me. Yes, it is very much mainstream and easy listening but is so very good!

The Essential Kenny G

Artist: Kenny G
Title: The Essential Kenny G
Genre: Jazz
Label: Arista/Legacy
Website

I miss listening to Kenny G. I got into his music during the 80s while listening to Gravity, Duotones, and Silhouette. I never claimed to be a jazz purist and never will be, thus my acceptance of Kennys music was not a problem. He was the artist everyone loved to hate because of his tremendous success and crossover ability. That kind of attitude is the result of sour grapes and envy. In my case, it was unfortunate that my interest in Kenny G tailed off then gradually faded away entirely.

It takes a great two-disc set like The Essential Kenny G to stoke those old fires again. It worked well; I cannot stop listening to this set. If you stop and think about it for a minute, his approach and crossover success is similar to that of Herb Alpert back in the 60s. The press certainly did not tank Alpert; in fact, he was the critics darling for some time and enjoyed many years of top selling albums. So what makes Kenny G any different really? Well like they say, you cannot argue with success and this 31-track set certainly sets the record straight.

Kennys infamous soprano sax is instantly recognizable and it has become a smooth jazz and pop staple up and down the radio dial for many years now. While the instrumentals he recorded may be some of the most memorable for listeners such as myself, that go back to the early days of his career, the vocal tracks hold their own as well. We've Saved the Best for Last comes to mind as one of the very best, its music for lovers and a tune that never grows old no matter how many times you hear it. And no wonder it rings true after all these years, the immortal Motown man Smokey Robinson sings the lead on the track. Kenny never took anything for granted before going into the studio; he surrounded himself with the best talent available. Enlisting artists like Chaka Khan to come in and sing Beautiful, George Benson to lay down the intro guitar licks for Summertime, Peabo Bryson and Michael Bolton for By the Time This Night Is Over, or getting Bolton in to sing Missing You Now, was the ultimate icing on the cake to cement his place in music history. All of his wonderful instrumental voyages and the vocal tracks made for an unbeatable combination and it pushed Kenny into the stratosphere were few have gone.

May the all gloomy Gus types and the critics be damned; those that spurned this talented man should have another look at what they once criticized. Kenny G had that groove thing in sync for a very long time, and his talent is well packaged and presented on this two-disc set. The liner notes feature comments by the artist on each track, making it a more personalized listening experience for those that have appreciated his work. I do not think I have to say this is necessity for lovers of smooth jazz.

Lee Nysted-Shoot From The Hip

Artist: Lee Nysted
Title: Shoot From The Hip
Genre: Rock-Jazz Rock Fusion
Label: Nysted Music
Website

Lee Nysted takes music and words, does it all his way, and calls his new album Shoot From The Hip. That expression refers to a person that tells it like it is and Nysted does that on all 12 tracks. Having traversed his own spiritual path over the years, awakening on the other side a new man, he speaks from his heart and lets his guitar do a lot of the talking with a combination of potent rock and jazz-rock fusion.

The opening track The Semantical Consort is a real rocker, an obvious choice for an album opener and the title track is another earth shaker, it features some nice guitar licks that puts Nysted in a good light as a real craftsman with the six-string. Fire In The Hole is a nice jazz-rock fusion track. The combination of the two genres that play off each other is like the yin and yang of music at work. All Gods Children is a great message with some of the best guitar work on the album.

The reason I can appreciate this album so much is the two-fold purpose it serves. The music lets you cut loose emotionally and the words get to the heart of the matter with a beeline right to your soul. So not only did the music touch me, it was Nysteds heartfelt message, and one I could understand perfectly. I know from whence he came. In the track Windows he says I know hope, and I know you, he is talking about the spirit in the sky, the higher power, God, whatever you choose to call it, a power greater than mankind, whatever works for you. I Surrender is the most prolific song and its a statement from a man that changed his life forever by making one decision, giving up the substances that took precedence over everything and turning it over to someone or something more capable of handling it. This may be too heavy for some of you that cannot relate but I had to express all of this because that is what this music revolves around. It is easy enough to apply any of it to your own life even though you may have walked a different path than Lee Nysted.

If you look at the cover you see two very colorful birds in flight, which Nysted refers to in the music, the message is very clear, free your soul and you can fly. It is apparent the artist let his hair down on this impressive release. The sound and production are excellent and so is the musicianship. Whether or not you can relate to the lyrics, although it is a bonus if you can, the music will set you free.

Proto-Kaw-The Wait Of Glory

Artist: Proto-Kaw
Title: The Wait Of Glory
Genre: Progressive Rock-Jazz Rock Fusion
Label: Inside Out
Website

In 2004, Kerry Livgren rejoined his old friends in his pre-Kansas band Proto-Kaw. They took a roll of the dice with Before Became After</I?, as Livgren says, and the response was incredible. In 2002 they dug in the archives and released Early Recordings From Kansas 1971-1973, which was Proto-Kaw, and that is what started the ball rolling. Now its two years later and they have returned triumphantly with yet another masterpiece called The Wait Of Glory.

I have been spinning this disc for two weeks solid now, listening for different nuances that I did not catch from the previous listen. It works that way with the interesting complex musical structures that Proto-Kaw offers. While I loved Before Became After, I think this album shows more maturity and cohesiveness as a unit. Although the first album was an experiment of sorts, it worked very well and I think this album is one-step better, although I could not imagine that prior to hearing this.

Livgren is one intense writer; he is a Christian on a mission to spread his word through some of the most intriguing and attention-grabbing music made today. This is as good as or better than anything that he did with Kansas. He writes about the excesses of man, his demise, and the dangers of the proliferation of his soul. It could be very dark music but it is not as each track has plenty of light and hope waiting on the other side. As they say, there are two sides to every story.

The emotional opening track Nevermore suggest that there is no more need to cry or die, it is what the Great Spirit has in store for us if we live right and seek the light. Lynn Meredith is a fantastic vocalist; he takes Livgrens lyrics and makes them come alive, although I cannot help but hear Steve Walsh at times, especially on Old Number, I swear I heard Steve chime in with some background vocals, and on Melicus Gladiator he sounds very similar to Walsh as well. Meredith does a good job carving out his own territory as a vocalist and sounds original for a majority of the album, but just as on the first album, I cannot help but make that comparison and it is of course a high-level compliment from my viewpoint. The most moving and rich track for my listening was When the Rains Come, the lyrics really touched my soul. Lines like The rain will fall with life, give you hope and optimism for a better world.

Kerry Livgren is the consummate artist articulating his deepest thoughts and beliefs through his music, and there are few as prolific anywhere in the world. He could not have aligned himself with a better group of musicians. Some of the changes in the compositions you hear will make your head spin; take Osvaldo's Groceries for instance, which is the shortest running track on the album clocking in at just over 3 minutes. The band changes tempo at least 10 times during the course of the composition. This bands modus operandi is to keep you on your toes and listening for changes while intently focused on their lyrics. It requires deep introspection and multi-tasking listening abilities-there is no question about that.

I will say it now; this will easily be one of the top prog-rock albums of 2006. As Before Became After will go down as one of the prog-rock classics, The Wait Of Glory will make Proto-Kaw legends in their own time. This is not to be missed, another perfect 10.

Shannon Janssen-The Keys Of Christmas

Artist: Shannon Janssen
Title: The Keys Of Christmas
Genre: Jazz-New Age-Classical-Traditional
Label: Maxville Records
Website
CD Baby Link

This is the third album I have covered by Shannon Janssen and I am continually impressed and enlightened by her tremendous talent on the piano.

The Keys Of Christmas came at a great time for me the past few days. The stress of certain situations was bearing down on me, and I put this wonderful CD on then suddenly my attitude began to change quickly. Not only did it put me in the holiday spirit, Janssens jazz-new age keyboard interpretations of yearly favorites and her own adaptations of seasonal classics was so beautiful and inviting I had to keep giving it a spin, three times in two days actually. When you hear something that is healing and spiritual you want more, it is natural to feel drawn towards the light to put a smile back in your heart.

Once again, Mark Vincent Pence is on hand to lend his expertise to the recording process. His orchestrations are the sweets for the sweet as they say. Pence is a real pro that compliments the artistry of Shannon Janssen in just the right way. That slice of heaven that Janssen is so adept in relaying in her music finds the perfect partner in well-timed orchestrations.

As I recall, the last two albums I heard from this talented lady had the same effect on me. Janssen has enormous potential and it is obvious to me now that she could decide to go in any direction with styles of music and have success. Ultimately that is the position any musician wants to be in, having no boundaries makes you more marketable. The only things left for this woman is for the right individual to discover her and present opportunities that allow those great talents to keep on growing and blossoming. This was an obvious choice to make a Christmas album and every composition is strong, her piano playing congeals with every element around her. What is there left to say? Holiday music is supposed to make you feel great, and without a doubt, The Keys Of Christmas gets the job done without any vocals. This album is a great triumph as most people like to sing along to their favorite songs. Trust me when I say this, you will not find it necessary to sing as your heart and soul will be singing right along every step of the way, and that is all you need to make holiday music feel right.

Re: Promote your artistic and creative t

Hi!

Im representing a Jazz group of Dominican Republic, this is Fell Vega and his Orquesta de las Danzas Mezcladas. This is an independent Caribbean Jazz & World music group trying to expand our music to other countries.

Fell Vega, director of "La Orquesta de Las Danzas Mezcladas," is a renowed Dominican artist. A percussionist with over 25 years on the national and international scene, he has distinguished himself in his field for his quest to find the sound of life through experimenting with recyclable materials to make instruments that he plays at each of his performances. His use of pails, buckets, lids, pots and any ordinary object that makes a sound, this has earned him on many occasions the title of music wizard from Dominican music critics.

The Orquestas repertoire is made up of compositions with a strong ethnic fusion that is the result of the African, Spanish and Taino influence ever present in the Caribbean islands. Adding touches of Oriental influences and Dominican folklore that make up the multifaceted musical expressions that turn each of the Orquestas presentations into something unique and intriguing.

The band is composed of Dominican musicians with vast experience in their craft:

Oscar Almonte (guitar)
Jose Marte (accordion)
Eugenio Monte de Oca (Tuba)
Ivanova Casimiro (Violin)
Cukin Curiel (Percussion)
Eliezer Ramirez (percussion),
Fell Vega (director, vocals, percussion).
