Graffiti game banned

15-02-2006
From: AAP

A COMPUTER game that encourages graffiti has been banned from sale in Australia.

The federal Classification Review Board ruled against the distribution of Atari's Marc
Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure after it originally was granted an MA rating.
The board said the game gave users graffiti tips and positive reinforcement for the
illegal activity.

It was due to be released on Friday, but the Local Government Association of Queensland
called for the decision to be reviewed.

Association president Paul Bell labelled it a big win.

"This decision is a win for councils throughout Australia, the general public and
commonsense," he said.

"We have fought the release of this game, which urges players to indulge in graffiti `to
make a statement', since its existence was first brought to our notice in August last
year."

Mr Bell said Australian councils spent up to $60m a year removing graffiti.

He said the figure did not include costs incurred by state and federal governments and the
private sector.

"It's good to see the review board has recognised the Atari company's irresponsible moves
to encourage young people to vandalise the community," Mr Bell said.

"Previously, our appeals to the company to withdraw the game had fallen on deaf ears."

Total bullshit!!!!!!!
Why don't they ban all the games where you steal cars, shoot and stab people etc? This
shit makes me furious. Damn fools.

But at the end of the day, they try and turn society against it because they hate it so
much and know it can't be stopped so they do what ever they can to make themselves feel
better.

Keep it colourful hey! icon_biggrin.gif

I reckon its full of sh#t.
They (the local council across board) currently spend $60m pa for cleaning up grafiti.
I uderstand if their arguement was, "since the release of the game, there has been a
dramatic jump in the figures from day one of the sale".
But to bad it before anticipating its bad effect?

What if it carved the figure? because some people would just indulge in this game and not
actually go out and do it themselves anymore?
Have they done any sort of Impact assessment?
I'd like to see that.

If that's not the case, at least it gives some tips to people, so when they do actually do
it, its not as ugly as some of those "tag" crap, and it will actually be more artistic...
