DJ HEAVEN

DJ Heaven: She’s of the nicest ladies you could meet and she’s a bloody spunk! But wait, she’s an excellent progressive/tech/house DJ too and she even helps out under-privileged kids. It’s no small wonder they called her DJ Heaven writes Danny Corvini as the deck diva blazes a trail of glory all the way to Australia once again.

Where are you at the moment?

I’m at home, in London.

Cold enough for ya?

It’s not too bad actually, surprisingly, it’s pretty mild for this time of year. But you never know, it could turn any day!

What other tropical paradises are you playing in en route to Sydney?

I’m playing in Kansas and Houston, then Chicago, and then I fly back to London. Then I pack my stuff on the Monday morning and leave for Bankok. I’m playing there and then I fly over to the Gold Coast and start my tour of Australia.

Bloody hell!

(Laughs)

How is your residency at Limelight in New York going?

They closed it because of all the September 11th incidents. Then they sold it to new owners, so I’m not sure what’s happening at the moment. I’ve been doing my Chicago gigs in the meantime which I do every second month, but we’re yet to work it all out because I’m going away to Australia and won’t be until March/April. The Limelight is one of the oldest clubs in New York so it’s seen a lot. It’s an amazing club – an actual church with all the stained glassed windows left in. It’s all really beautiful, but I’m not sure about the ethics of clubbing in a church! (laughs)

Last year you were a guestspeaker at the New Music West Convention – with Lenny from Motorhead of all people! Is that something you’re into doing – spreading of your knowledge at these sorts of events and nurturing younger DJ talent?

I’ve been helping out this year at this place in London for underprivileged kids actually. It’s an expensive issue, buying decks, buying records and stuff, so the DJs donate their time and teach them the basic mixing skills. I get a lot of promo’s and quite often I don’t like them all, so I take a box of records every week. It’s nice because you’re putting something to good use rather than it just going to waste, and they’re chuffed, so it’s really good. By the end of the course some of them were getting gigs in local bars and clubs, you don’t know where they can go from there.

What were the highlights of your year in 2001?

It’s been a real experience going to America and understanding more about the country and culture. Obviously getting access to record shopping over there has been great! I’ve had a few good times playing in Ibiza playing for Paul Oakenfold’s night at Pascha, and going over to Cypress was good. Then there’s Buenos Aires and Argentina and everything, and that was special because it’s a beautiful country and the people love to party. So there’s been numerous occasions – I should be thankful really.

What, who or where do you want to conquer in 2002?!

I want to pass my motorcycle test! (laughs) But as far as my career goes I’ve got a lot going on because I’ve signed to www.trustthedj.com, which is this website that all these DJs have signed up to and we do monthly mixes that you can order from the site. But to be honest I never think too far ahead – as long as I’ve got an overall structure that’s good enough for me!
